Imprecatory Prayer

Wow. This story is amazing. It involves one "preacher" asking the members of his congregation to pray for the death of another preacher after the second preacher asked that the first preacher be investigated for using his ministry to endorse a political candidate.

You read that right. The first preacher, the Rev. Wiley S. Drake, wants God to KILL the second preacher, Barry W. Lynn, for pointing out that Drake should not be using his church to endorse a political candidate. In particular, Drake suggested the following prayer to the members of his congregation:

"Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow."

This apparently doesn't violate the commandment "Thou Shall Not Kill" because they are asking God to do the killing. Nice. And they say the Taliban exists only in Afghanistan!

The whole sordid story can be read here.

Thanks for your support. Of course, you are raising just the kind of nitpicking details that Pastor Drake probably will stay awake nights worrying about.
I hope you are enjoying your sabbatical in Denmark.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for finding my post and leaving a comment! I think what Rev. Drake is doing is absurd (and unbelievably primitive for a person who lives in the 21st century!) and I hope you can continue to do your good work at Americans United in the face of distractions like these.

More power to you!

Ken
