America Wake Up

Hey America, pay attention:

The day that George Bush signed the law that killed Habeus Corpus and put a stake into the notion that the USA represents the "good guys" by legalizing torture (while simultaneously indemnifing the torturers), he ALSO signed a law that makes it easier for him to declare martial law in America. I guess he's planning to do something REALLY unpopular and he'll need to deploy the military against his own country to stay in power.

Read the details of this latest assault on our freedoms, here:

Toward Freedom &emdash; Bush Moves Toward Martial Law

Our only hope is to vote these scoundrels out of office over the next two elections... although with this easement on declaring martial law, it may already be too late.

What sort of world will my children grow up in? I'm very worried.

Another Reason To Be Afraid

Apparently, the people running the "war" that we are in, don't care enough to even know the most basic facts about our enemies:

Can You Tell a Sunni From a Shiite?

I have this feeling that not only does our emperor have no clothes, but our entire government is running around naked too!

Olbermann Continues to Kick Ass...

Now, will America listen?

Lets hope so. Time is running out on our liberties.

RIP Habeus Corpus.

Lilja's Fortune

Last night we visited the new Apple Store that just opened up in Boulder at the 29th Street Mall that had its grand opening yesterday. The new Apple Store is terrific and it was selling iPods like hotcakes last night.

We then headed over to Pei Wei Asian Diner for dinner and really liked it. We'll definitely be going back. Anyway, at the end of dinner, we each received a fortune cookie and Lilja received the following phrase (its not really a fortune):

Others admire your assertiveness

We think this fits Lilja like a glove! :-)

Max's Soccer Team

Max and his soccer team, the Sliders

For the past six weeks, Max has been a member of an under-7 soccer team called the Sliders. His team is doing very well this year having won their first four games. Max has learned a lot in these last six weeks, and I've already seen a big improvement in how he plays. He's lucky to be on a team with several strong players and I can see their skills making an impression on him and how he thinks about the game of soccer. Its great to see.

There are more pictures available at Max's soccer team photoset. This photo set also contains some pictures of Lilja and Addie having fun at one of Max's soccer games. Note: if you click on the link above and you don't see any photos, let me know. You need to become a "friend" of mine on Flickr and then you'll be able to see all of the photos without any problems.

Enjoy!

Three Good Quotes

Hi,

Sorry for the dearth of posts here recently... the semester has body slammed me to the point that I'm happy when I manage to show up to one of my four lectures each week prepared with, you know, slides and stuff to talk about. :-)

Anyway, I was cleaning up my inbox today and discovered a message I sent to myself to remember three good quotes.

Here they are:

"The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it." — Franklin P. Jones

(Story of my life.)

"Don't use a big word where a diminutive one will suffice." — Unknown

(Guaranteed to crack up any academic… well most of them anyway.)

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" — Benjamin Franklin

(This is a good one to keep in mind when the TSA confiscates your toothpaste because its sitting in a container that can hold more than 3oz of toothpaste. Note: this happened recently to a colleague of mine in my computer science department.)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the quotes, I figure we all need some cheering up in light of the fact that our country decided to legalize torture and attack the notion of habeas corpus this week.

Enjoy your rights while you have them, our current administration is supposedly focused on enemy combatants now, but of course, U.S. citizens who disagree with this administration must be aiding the enemy (right?), so it won't be long until they turn their attention to the terrorists who live among us.

Enjoy,

Ken
