Lilja's Last Word

While I'm the first one to admit that I'm extremely biased on the following issue, I think Lilja is pretty dang smart for a two year old. This morning while we were driving the kids to their pre-school, Max and I were talking about the Pokemon TV Show for a few minutes. (Not that I'm an expert on Pokemon, but I've been learning about them as Max does, and he is currently REALLY into all things Pokemon.) Anyway, he says to me, "Papa, can Grovyle fly?" And, I say "I don't think so, because Grovyle evolved from Treecko and Treecko can't fly." (Not bad, right?) And just as I finish saying this, Lilja, who has been listening to this conversation quite intently, says "Birds fly."

And we all laugh as we realize that Lilja was just looking for a way to participate!

246 Days

246 Days. That's how long I kept a Blackadder DVD that Niels Olof loaned me way back on my birthday because I had mentioned to him that I had never seen a Blackadder episode. That will teach him to loan me anything ever again! (In my defense, well, er, you see, its like this: I'VE BEEN BUSY!)

Anyway, the six episodes from season 2 are very funny and they show that Rowan Atkinson really didn't need to do that whole Mr. Bean thing. Now, I'll see if Niels Olof will let me borrow one of the other seasons! :-)

Be careful! Your musical tastes could get you arrested!

While I'm in the mode of posting items that do not relate to Max, Lilja, or Denmark, I decided to point to a very scary story about a person being arrested on the suspicion of being a terrorist because of his taste in music.

Via Reuters: British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said on Wednesday…The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared -- and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected."

This is the problem with our War on Terror: its very easy for a person to become a terrorist; all you need is for someone who doesn't like you (or your musical tastes, or how you dress, or how you look, etc.) to make an accusation and you can wind up being arrested!

You can say “But that won't happen to me, I don't even like The Clash!” If you do, you're missing the point.

Be afraid, our rights are erroding to the point where the next one arrested could be you.

SubEthaEdit and MacZOT.com

[Apologies for a non-family related blog entry!]

There is a really cool text editor for MacOS X that allows people to collaboratively write documents in real time via MacOS X's Bonjour (previously Rendezvous) networking technology; this editor is SubEthaEdit from CodingMonkeys. Today SubEthaEdit is the subject of BLOGZOT 2.0 on MacZOT.com. MacZOT and TheCodingMonkeys will award $105,000 in Mac software if enough people blog about the offer. Essentially, each time a blogger points to today's offer from MacZOT, the CodingMonkeys will take $0.05 off the price of a license for SubEthaEdit. If enough people blog about the offer, the price will become $0.00 and people get the chance of obtaining this amazing collaborative text editor for free!

Anyway, I'll be keeping my eye on the price of this software throughout the day. If it gets down to around 15 dollars, the CodingMonkeys will gain me as a fully licensed user!

We will return to posts about Max, Lilja, and Denmark shortly! :-)

Maja's Last Day

Maja, a teacher at Lilja's pre-school had her last day this past Friday due to the start of her maternity leave. (Maja is due two weeks AFTER L. is due, so L. should really start taking a break from work now too!)

Lilja really liked Maja and is going to miss her quite a bit. It wasn't too long after Lilja started going to Bodøgården that Lilja liked going to Maja as soon as we arrived in the morning... it really made the transition easy. (Lilja likes her other teachers, of course, but she established a connection with Maja quite quickly!) Lilja is enchanted by the fact that Maja is going to have a baby and likes to say "baby is hiding" to the question "Where is Maja's baby?" (She says the same thing about L.'s baby!) Indeed, with both Maja and Leysia pregnant, Lilja is now convinced that she has a baby hiding inside of her! Its very cute to see how fascinated Lilja is with this.

At her going away party, Maja said that she's going to miss Lilja a lot and that she really enjoyed getting to know Lilja over the past nine months. If possible, Maja is going to try to come back to visit Lilja one more time before we return to the states in July. That will be really nice and Lilja is looking forward to it!

Here are two pictures I took at Maja's going-away party. The first shows Lilja helping Maja open the gift we gave to her for her baby.

The second is a cute photo of the two of them, showing how comfortable Lilja is with Maja.

Take care, Maja, and thanks again for taking care of Lilja this year!

More Fun With Dates

Boing-Boing points out that there are two more “numerically cool” dates this year:

06:06:06 06/06/06

(6 minutes and 6 seconds past 6 on June 6th, 2006)

and

11:10:09 08/07/06

(10 minutes and 9 seconds past 11 on August 7th 2006) or
(10 minutes and 9 seconds past 11 on July 8th 2006) depending on how you format dates.

Enjoy,

Max's Noodle Art from September 2005

Here is a video of Max (and ultimately Lilja) that I have been meaning to post for a long time.

Last September, Max used pieces from dried spaghetti noodles to form his name on his desk. Leysia interviews him about it and his explanations about what he did is just so sweet that it makes me feel good each time I see it.

During the video you can hear Lilja percolating in the background and, by the end of the video, she is front and center and trying to take over.

Enjoy!

Lilja Finds An Egg

Here's a short video showing Lilja finding an egg during our Easter egg hunt this year.

As you can see, she was a full and active participant!

Enjoy!

Max's Danish Proficiency

Max's ability to speak Danish has been growing by leaps and bounds during the past nine months. He can now hold his own in a Danish conversation and several Danes have told us that he speaks with no American accent (unlike his papa who still can't pronounce “gade” correctly). Indeed, just the other day, Max spent about ten minutes talking to our friend Klaus, who is the father of Eva, one of Max's schoolmates, about Star Wars. Klaus had not seen Max for awhile and was completely stunned by Max's ability. About halfway through Max's speech, which included all sorts of references to Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Obi Wan Kenobi, and the like, Klaus turned to me with wide eyes and said "This is incredible!" while being careful not to interrupt Max.

Max has now gotten to the point that he can translate spoken Danish for us, albeit at the level of a five year old, and when he's speaking Danish in front of us, he has no problem switching back and forth between Danish and English to let mama and papa know what he's saying.

However, this wasn't always the case. It used to be that he would speak Danish only to Danes and was uncomfortable speaking Danish when Leysia and I were present. So, back then, we had to get sneaky and invite friends from Max's pre-school over to our house for play dates. He and his friend would sit and play Lego Star Wars on my laptop and speak to each other in Danish while Leysia was a few feet away recording Max's speaking ability for posterity! :-)

Here are three videos that are rather uneventful except for the fact that Max is speaking only in Danish in each of them! I've always “known” that kids can pick up new languages easier than adults, but now I can truly believe it.

Note: it may take awhile for these videos to load once you have clicked the play button. Be patient! You can also try viewing them directly on YouTube by clicking directly on the headings located above each movie.

Max and Axel on Feb. 21, 2006:

Max and Lucas on March 12, 2006:

Max and Kristian on April 6, 2006:

I should note that Lilja has picked up quite a bit of the Danish language as well, and regularly speaks short Danish phrases, especially during the week when she hears Danish all day at her pre-school. But she is only two, and so her ability to speak Danish is like her ability to speak English, just in very short sentences. She's up to about 5 word sentences in English now, with her Danish just behind that at about two to three word sentences. She's very much into personal property right now (as are all two year olds) and so, oddly enough, her favorite phrase in both languages is "That's mine!" :-)

Enjoy!

Easter 2006

Easter 2006 turned out to be quite a day! It started very early in the morning when the Easter Bunny entered our house via our balcony and left gifts for the children on our dining room table. He left these gifts for Lilja.

And these gifts for Max.

And then helped himself to a carrot.

In the morning, the kids could barely contain themselves to see what he had left behind.

Here's what happened when they came into the dining room!

After appreciating the gifts and eating the first chocolate of the day, we settled down to Leysia's wonderfully prepared breakfast.

After breakfast, we got ready for the day and headed down to the Queen's palace.

It was the Queen's birthday today, so the rest of Aarhus was there.

She came out and waved hello... about five or so minutes before we got there. :-( We were milling about aimlessly, feeling like fools, when we ran into our friends Anne Marit and Klaus with their three kids and Klaus's parents. We had just had them over to our apartment on Thursday for a pre-Easter egg hunt (the subject of a future blog post), so we were quite happy and surprised to see them again! We all headed over to MindePark and talked while our kids played at the park's playground.

We then said our good byes and headed home. On the way back, Leysia snapped this picture of a strange humanoid creature in the forest... we don't think its Big Foot, but perhaps one of his smaller, cuter, better dressed cousins.

Once we got back to our apartment, we discovered that the Easter Bunny had prepared an Easter egg hunt for Max and Lilja; we suspect he did it the previous night and we failed to notice earlier when we were rushing to miss the Queen's appearance down the road. The kids launched into the egg hunt with considerable enthusiasm and found the eggs with remarkable speed. Lilja has, at the age of two, completely grokked the concept of an egg hunt and she gives her older brother a run for his money in the competition to see who can find the most eggs!

Leysia then took a nap, while Max, Lilja, and I relaxed while watching a movie (Ice Age, which we have on DVD and watch on my laptop). When Leysia got up, she made an excellent dinner consisting of baked salmon, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. Max earned brownie points by helping in the kitchen as well as setting the table. Lilja helped out too, although sometimes her help was less than helpful. (If you've ever dealt with small children, you know what I mean.) Unfortunately, none of our pictures of dinner turned out well, so lets move straight to dessert, which was chocolate-dipped strawberries! Lilja and Max especially liked having their own individual bowls of melted chocolate and both required a shower by the end. (We anticipated that they would both end up covered in chocolate, which is why they are not wearing any clothes in the picture below.)

After the shower, there was a little time left for one more TV show (Charlie Brown, in Danish!).

Then it was time for bed and once I got Lilja down (which involved me reading “Curious George goes to the Hospital”) I finally had time to sit and create this post; which I'm posting at 23:52, which means I have eight more minutes of Easter to enjoy!

Hope you had an enjoyable Easter, and that the Easter Bunny brought you as much chocolate as he brought us! :-)

Ribe

About 3 weeks ago, on March 25th, we took a trip down to the city of Ribe (pronounced REE-buh), known as Denmark's oldest town. It was established at the beginning of the 8th century as a center of trade and, according to Ribe's visitor's guide, has a “dramatic history [filled with] Vikings, kings, queens, bishops, traitors, witches, floods and fires.”

The most striking part about the city is its old-style buildings, most of them dating from the 16th century, as older buildings were destroyed by a fire that raged through the city center in 1580.

We also enjoyed looking at Ribe's cathedral. Work began on it in 1150 and it took 100 years to complete. (The first church in Ribe was established in 860 nearly 300 years before work on the cathedral began.)

Ribe is a port town situated on the west coast of Jutland, which is what made it a natural center for trade, and allowed us to take some nice pictures of the water flowing through the town.

That last picture shows us playing the game that's described in one of the Winnie the Pooh books that involves throwing sticks into a river on one side of a bridge and the running to the other side of the bridge to see which stick appears first. In the story, while Pooh, Rabbit, and Piglet are waiting for their sticks, Eeyore comes floating out from under the bridge having recently been bounced into the river by Tigger. (Ah, the joys of reading children's stories every night for the past 4 years or so.)

We had a nice lunch at the Quedens Gaard a cafe and bric-a-brac shop located in a building dating from the 18th century. The meal was good and Leysia purchased some nice bric-a-brac there! :-) Max and Lilja were having fun as you can see below!

After lunch we encountered firemen working on another interesting aspect of the city which is its stork nests. The firemen are in charge of maintaining the nests and so in these pictures, you can see a fireman going up to the nest to add material, repair damage, and the like. It must be nice to be a stork in Ribe!

In that last picture, Max is standing behind the trash can, not in it! :-) He sure was fascinated by the whole idea of people maintaining nests for birds!

Finally, the highlight of the day was our chance encounter with Danish designer Bo Bendixen, who is famous for his beautifully illustrated prints, t-shirts, postcards, and the like. We love his stuff and ended up purchasing several of his t-shirts and postcards, and also three sets of his place settings for children. Two we gave as gifts to Katrine (for her daughter Anne and her new baby Signe) and we've kept one for ourselves. Bo was a very interesting guy, who was in Ribe to deliver new products to his store. We very much enjoyed meeting him and he was nice enough to pose for two pictures with Max and Lilja.

We had a great time in Ribe!

Three Months to Go!

As hard as it is for us to believe, we have approximately three months left in Denmark. Our year here is simply slipping by way too fast! :-(

We've been keeping busy the past few weeks with trips to Ribe, Kolding, Randers, having friends over at least four times, and no month would be complete without a trip to the hospital. (Max got a cut on his head from doing something he wasn't supposed to, and we had to take him in to get checked; fortunately, he didn't need stiches and he's doing just fine!)

This week has been a bit odd, since practically the entire country shuts down for Easter. Our kids' pre-school is closed for all of this week (a fact that didn't set in for us until last Friday at 4 PM when we picked them up and the teachers said to us 'See you in 10 days!!!') and all the shops were closed today and tomorrow in observance of Holy Thursday and Good Friday! Shops are also closed on the day after Easter. Fortunately, shops are open on Saturday, so we can stock up on the basics after doing a big shop on Wednesday.

I will post pictures from all of our trips and all of our entertaining soon!

01:02:03 04/05/06

Also via Boing-Boing: A moment in time: 01:02:03 04/05/06

This morning for one brief second, the time and date was: 01:02:03 04/05/06.

Provided, of course, that you format the date and time using U.S. conventions. If you follow European conventions, the same thing will happen on the morning of May 4th.

This will not happen again until the year 2106, i.e. it happens every 100 years.

Enjoy,

Ken
